Trump makes decisive comeback - 25th November 2024 View All
Following an election campaign charged with controversy on both sides, Donald Trump has been elected the next president of the USA.
Trump's opponent for the presidency, Democrat Kamala Harris, only stepped into the ring on the 31st July. Her participation followed President Biden's decision to withdraw from the election contest after his disastrous televised debate with Trump.
For former president Trump, the road to the White House has been a rather hazardous one, including two attempts on his life and also numerous court cases. On the 30th May, he was convicted of a crime related to the payment of 'hush money', given to individuals to save his reputation in an attempt to illegally influence the 2016 election.
There are two more criminal cases related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, as well as potentially expensive civil cases. When he begins his administration early next year, he'll be the first president to take office with criminal convictions, although it appears to be of little importance to his supporters.
Zachary Rindfuss: "I was happy with him when he was in before and then he lost the second election. And I see, I think I've seen America really make a downfall, and I like, I'm, I'm glad he's back in."
His critics, meanwhile, disagree.
Will Brown: "I am definitely not okay with that - you know, you know, very disappointing. I actually can't believe he was even eligible to run again, you know, considering everything that, you know, he did, you know, just unbelievable."
Winning not only the presidential election but also taking over the Senate and the House of Representatives is a massive turn-around for the Republican party. One hospital worker, Edwin Ortiz, was astonished by the scale of the party's election win.
Edwin Ortiz: "I knew it was going to be really close, 50/50. I didn't realize how far to one side it would've ended up being."
Trump's inauguration as the 47th president of the United States is scheduled for 20th January 2025.
