Captain Tom raises £30 million 04/05/2020 View All
99 year old World War II veteran Captain Tom Moore has walked a hundred circuits of his garden for charity.
Captain Moore: "I'm Captain Moore. I'm walking for the NHS."
He'd only intended to raise £1,000 for the UK's National Health Service charities, with his children initially sponsoring him £1 per lap.
However, Captain Tom's walk soon went viral. When he marked his 100th birthday on 30th April, a staggering £30 million had been donated by the public.
In praise of his efforts, Captain Tom has received a promotion to honorary Colonel in the British Army. And on top of being sponsored by so many, he's also been sent over 125,000 birthday cards!
With no space for so many cards at home, they have been put up at a local school. For Colonel Tom, standing out among these well wishes is a personalised card sent by the Queen.
