Underwater museum in Greece - 27 August 2021 View All
A new museum opened in Greece. But this museum is different. It is under the sea. They wanted to open in 2020. But there was Covid-19. Now it is finally open.
The museum is a very old ship near Alonissos. Visitors dive to see it. Lisette Fredelund is from Denmark. She wanted to see the 2,500 year old wine pots. And she imagined people's lives in the past.
Lisette Fredelund: "It was with a different perspective. We are not watching only marine life or corals but watching ancient civilizations. I was just, while we were down there trying to imagine what it had been like being on a vessel transporting wine from one shore to another. It was just amazing."
Some people can't scuba dive. But they can enjoy the museum. They can see underwater on screens. Hans Jurgen Fercher is from Austria. He wants to dive and see history. He thinks the museum is special.
Hans Jurgen Fercher: "It makes it special and unique that it's a combination of diving and archaeological diving. It's diving into history. It makes this place live and live again, so this is what touches me."
A dive with a guide is 95 euros. But you can do it alone for fun. It is half the price. The museum thinks it will be popular. They want people to come all year.
They found four more ships under the sea in the area. Kostas Efstathiou is excited about the future.
Kostas Efstathiou: "We are very excited to have another four wrecks in the following two years and that is really going to put Alonissos on the world diving map. We are going to have like an underwater safari of ancient wrecks."
