A new presidency - 22nd January 2021 View All

Joe Biden officially became President Biden on Wednesday, 20th January. He is the 46th US president.

Biden was made president at a special ceremony. This always happens outside the US Capitol. Just two weeks before, Trump rioters had attacked the building.

Former presidents usually attend the ceremony for the new president. Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton were present. But President Trump decided not to follow this tradition.

The ceremony was different because of Covid-19. Crowds of people were unable to attend. Organisers put 200,000 flags outside the Capitol to represent the people.

Biden has always been interested in the US presidency. He is now the oldest person to become president.

Biden: "Preserve, protect and defend, the Constitution of the United States, so help me God."

Vice President Kamala Harris becomes the first woman in a presidential role. President Biden's speech noted the difference with a hundred years ago. Then, men had tried to stop women asking for the vote.

Harris: "I, Kamala Devi Harris, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies foreign and domestic."

His speech also asked Americans to cooperate. He promised to work hard to help everyone. He will focus on fighting Covid and increasing employment.

Biden: "Today on this January day, my whole soul is in this: bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation, and I ask every American to join me in this cause."

Performances included singing from Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez. A poem from Amanda Gorman spoke about democracy's power.

Gorman: "There is always light if only we're brave enough to see it. If only we're brave enough to be it."
