Euro 2020 England v Italy - 14th July 2021 View All
55 years after England's World Cup win, England fans met in the streets to watch their team's second ever international final. Euro 2020 had to wait due to Covid-19 but went ahead this year.
The final was held at London's historic Wembley Stadium. England's young team faced Italy, an experienced team who hadn't lost in over 30 matches.
Luke Shaw put England ahead in the opening minutes of the match. Italy came back strongly and equalised in the 67th minute. The remainder of the match and extra time were goalless.
The game went to a penalty shoot-out. After two missed penalties by each side, England's teenage striker, Bokayo Saka, stepped forward. His shot was saved by the Italian keeper and Italy were the champions.
England supporter, Geraldine shares her disappointment.
Geraldine Howard: "Gutted, absolutely gutted - but, you know, they made history. They got us to the first finals in 55 years. So, still got to be proud of them for what they achieved. Just absolutely gutted that it come down to penalties and we lost really, so... ."
England's young team has pleased the public because they're giving their wages to the NHS. They also have a strong anti-racism message.
Fan Ruhel explains the support for manager Gareth Southgate.
Ruhel: "I think this England team is very likeable, they're very relatable. It's a very diverse England team, so I think a lot of people can, you know, buy into the whole, whole ethos that Gareth is building. So yeah, I think, I think going into the World Cup next year, I think it's going to continue, yeah - this, this positive momentum."
Right now, Italian fans are celebrating and England fans need to wait longer to sing their song 'Football's coming home.'
