Little Amal's walk - 27th October 2021 View All

Little Amal is a giant puppet. She's a model of a Syrian refugee. Little Amal has walked 8,000 kilometres and has arrived in England. Millions of child refugees like Little Amal need to make this difficult journey without their family.

Little Amal's journey is part of an international arts festival. It's called 'The Walk'. When she arrives in a country, people celebrate with music and songs. She has walked through 8 different countries.

But in reality, most refugees aren't met with celebration. Jude Law is an actor from England. He believes people need to learn about the refugees' situation.

Jude Law: "It just seemed the most brilliant way to celebrate, try and raise awareness and share with the people who have taken a similar path to little Amal. So I'm just here to support all of that and I'm really proud to be one of the first to welcome her here in the UK, which is my home."

Little Amal is actually very tall. She was designed by a puppet company. Kevin Fitzmaurice, producer of 'The Walk' wants to share the serious purpose of her journey.

Kevin Fitzmaurice: "Amal, she is an art project at heart really, but I think the artists who have designed and built her and designed the whole project, I think it's really important for them that the humanitarian issues don't get forgotten in the political noise that's going on across the country and across the world at the moment."

Amal means 'hope' in Arabic. To celebrate her 10th birthday and her arrival in England, organisers of 'The Walk' have started a fund. This money goes to child refugees. It hopes to give them a better future.
