Twin trouble in Sri Lanka! 5th February 2020 View All
In Sri Lanka, an attempt to set a world record for the largest gathering of twins may have failed.
Organisers from the Sri Lanka Twins group asked multiples from all over the island to come to a sports stadium in the capital, Colombo. They were aiming to break the World Record for the number of twins, triplets and quadruplets in one place. The record, currently held by Taiwan, was set in 1999 when 3,961 pairs of twins, 37 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets gathered in one place.
But the success of the event in Sri Lanka may have also become its downfall. There were long queues as higher than expected numbers flocked to the stadium to register and show their birth certificates.
Organisers said the huge turnout meant they were unable to meet the strict guidelines set by the Guinness Book of Records. The rules demand that all those registered must remain in the stadium for at least 5 minutes and pose together for a group photograph.
They must now all wait for a decision from the Guinness Book of Records. If they have failed, organisers say they will try again.
