Barbie joins the Day of the Dead - 30th October 2020 View All
The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico every 2nd November. Families celebrate the dead and gather at their graves. People bring offerings of favourite foods, drinks and flowers. Sweets are a central part of the celebrations. Everything is beautifully decorated with skulls and skeletons.
Now, a Day of the Dead Barbie has been created, which celebrates the festival.
Zoila Muntané, a Barbie collector, is delighted that the doll has been designed by a person with Mexican heritage.
Carlos Sandoval, also a toy collector, feels glad that such a marvellous tradition has been celebrated in this doll.
However, not everyone is as enthusiastic. Sociologist Roberto Alvarez Manzo says some people have complained. They think Barbie is misusing cultural heritage to benefit financially.
While people have different opinions about Barbie, the importance of the Day of the Dead is without doubt. It's recognised by UNESCO, which has included it in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
