E-waste dangers in the Philippines

Along a one kilometre piece of road in Manila, The Philippines, sit hundreds of people. They're taking apart used items like laptops. This is electronic or e-waste, and the workers are called 'mambabaklas'. They're searching for important metals like aluminium and copper to earn money.

However, this business is putting the workers' health at risk. By burning away the rubber parts, chemicals are released, such as mercury and lead.

The health risks include breathing problems but also diseases like cancer. Children are in serious danger too, according to Rosana Milan, a health clinic doctor.

Rosana Milan: "It's very risky for the babies, the toddlers, and even the schoolchildren because they're exposed to those kind of chemicals. Because while their father is working, no one to tend for the children."

For 13 years, Dexter Barsigan has been taking apart laptops and air conditioners for metal. But three years ago, his hands started aching and he began losing his eyesight. Nowadays, he sometimes simply sits and watches while his wife and nephew complete the work.

Dexter Barsigan: "I will continue this kind of work for our daily needs. I'll choose my children over my health. I would rather sacrifice my health for my children."

One of the highest e-waste producers in Southeast Asia, The Philippines produces 40 million kilogrammes annually. The country does have proper facilities with strict rules for processing e-waste, but the mambabaklas lack training and safety equipment.

The Medicins du Monde organisation's been trying to help by giving masks, gloves and safety advice. But Eva Lecat understands that putting food on the table is the most important thing.

Eva Lecat: "And them struggling with earning enough money just to feed their family, this is not their first priority. You know, health is clearly not their first priority. Their priority is to have food on the table." View Less
