New church tower is world's tallest - 20th April 2026 View All

As its steel and glass cross was placed atop its central tower, the Sagrada Familia took the title of the world's tallest church. Standing 172.5 metres tall, it's a new sight on the Barcelona skyline.

Architect Antoni Gaudí's unique style shapes the design, combining Gothic and Art Nouveau forms. While work began in 1882, over 100 years ago, its complex design is yet to be fully realised. Despite this, the iconic sight attracts 4.8 million visitors annually.

The basilica's construction hasn't run smoothly. When Gaudí died in 1926, barely 25 percent of it had been completed. Buried in the crypt of his creation, through the decades, the construction work around Gaudí has been interrupted by war, pandemic and lack of funds.

However, the present architect in charge of the project, Jordi Faulí, hopes to bring the UNESCO listed building to completion.

Jordi Faulí: "But perhaps we can say that with the placement of the cross, we will be almost 80 percent through the whole construction."

The key part of the project still outstanding is construction of its 'Glory facade'. This serves as the temple's main entrance, complete with an expansive public square and flight of stairs leading to it.

However, these features are a major point of contention with local residents. Spanish television reports the plans, which necessitate demolition of housing since built on the land, stand to affect 10,000 residents and 50 businesses.

While the final decision to permit the work lies with Barcelona's city council, several matters remain unclear. Who would fund the compulsory acquisition of the land and buildings? Beyond this, who would facilitate the relocation of the residents and businesses? View Less
