Jacinda Ardern wins election - 21st October 2020 View All
Jacinda Ardern's political group, the Labour Party, won New Zealand's general election on Saturday. She will stay as Prime Minister of New Zealand for another three years.
This is the first New Zealand general election with a clear winner since 1996. Normally, two or three political parties have to share power.
Ardern: "Tonight, New Zealand has shown the Labour Party its greatest support in at least 50 years."
Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister in 2017. Since then, she has had to manage a lot of big problems. There was New Zealand's worst terror attack. A volcano erupted and injured people. The economy has had difficulties too. But Ardern managed these problems well. This has made her popular in New Zealand and around the world.
After she won, Ardern gave a speech. She spoke in English and Maori, two of New Zealand's official languages.
Ardern: "Now more than ever is the time to keep going, to keep working, to grab hold of the opportunities that lay in front of us. So let's step forward together. Ka Hoake tonu tatou (Let's keep moving in Te Reo Maori). Let's keep moving."
