Jacinda Ardern re-elected - 21st October 2020 View All
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern won New Zealand's general election on Saturday. Ardern's Labour Party now has a majority as it won 64 seats in the 120 seat parliament.
The Labour Party is the first single party to be able to form a government in New Zealand since 1996. Coalition governments are usually formed by multiple political parties.
Ardern: "Tonight, New Zealand has shown the Labour Party its greatest support in at least 50 years."
In her first term as Prime Minister, Ardern faced a number of serious problems: New Zealand's worst ever terror attack, a deadly volcanic eruption, and serious economic problems. However, people value the way she's dealt with these problems. She's respected both at home and all over the world.
On the night of the win, Ardern addressed the nation. Her speech was in English and Maori, which are both official languages of New Zealand.
Ardern: "Now more than ever is the time to keep going, to keep working, to grab hold of the opportunities that lay in front of us. So let's step forward together. Ka Hoake tonu tatou (Let's keep moving in Te Reo Maori). Let's keep moving."
