A new pope for Roman Catholics - 19th May 2025

The white smoke streaming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican announced the election of a new pope by the group of chosen cardinals. On just the second day of the election process, the smoke encouraged thousands of tourists and locals to pour into St. Peter's Square, to await the appearance of the newly elected leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The identity of the new pope was revealed by Senior Cardinal Dominique Mamberti. He commenced his declaration with the Latin phrase "Habemus Papam", meaning, "We have a pope."

Historically, it's the first time the chosen Roman pontiff has been an American. Electing Robert Francis Prevost was a great surprise for many faithful, including the Director of Washington Cathedral.

Reverend Monsignor W. Ronald Jameson: "Very proud, but I must say, I was totally shocked and I was not expecting an American being named Pope. I thought, never in my lifetime, maybe later, but not in my lifetime."

In line with a tradition established centuries ago, Prevost has picked a papal name. Selecting Leo XIV is considered significant as it may reflect the strength he'll need during difficult times in his leadership.

Although the 69 year old was born on US soil, he's of French, Italian and Spanish descent and he also holds Peruvian citizenship, having resided there for many years. His supporters within the faith are optimistic that he'll maintain the inclusive approach of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

Azul Montemayor: "I'm a bit surprised. I was not expecting an American to be elected and I'm just, I'm hoping that he carries on Francis's legacy of just being more inclusive."

Pope Leo XIV was formally installed at a mass on 18th May, in St Peter's Square. 1.4 billion Roman Catholics worldwide now regard him as their spiritual guide.
