American pope takes papal reins - 19th May 2025

On just the second day after voting had got underway, a symbolic plume of white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Vatican's celebrated Sistine Chapel, declaring the successful election of the next pope by the conclave of cardinals. The sight prompted thousands of visitors and locals to flood into St. Peter's Square, where they waited expectantly for the newly elected head of the Roman Catholic Church to emerge.

Senior Cardinal Dominique Mamberti disclosed the new pope's identity, initiating with the distinctive Latin words "Habemus Papam", or "We have a pope." Robert Francis Prevost was revealed to be the chosen one, a unique honour as the first ever American pontiff. Along with countless others, the Director of Washington's St. Matthew's Cathedral was stunned by the appointment.

Reverend Monsignor W. Ronald Jameson: "Very proud, but I must say, I was totally shocked and I was not expecting an American being named Pope. I thought, never in my lifetime, maybe later, but not in my lifetime."

In keeping with a centuries-long custom, Prevost has adopted a papal name and his choice is Leo XIV, which as a name signals the fortitude necessary to lead during times of adversity, some commentators speculate. The Chicago-born 69 year old is also of Spanish, and Franco-Italian heritage and having been based in Peru for some years, he possesses Peruvian citizenship as well. The new Pope's loyal followers trust that his diverse background will help him perpetuate the inclusive approach of his predecessor, Francis.

Azul Montemayor: "I'm a bit surprised. I was not expecting an American to be elected and I'm just, I'm hoping that he carries on Francis's legacy of just being more inclusive."

Pope Leo XIV was installed in the inaugural mass in St. Peter's Square on 18th May, meaning his mission as shepherd to 1.4 billion Roman Catholics has officially commenced.
