Beyoncé biggest Grammy winner ever - 20th February 2023

The Grammys this year saw historic wins and performances, but the highlight was undoubtedly the moment pop icon Beyoncé won her 32nd award, breaking the record for most Grammys.

The artist made history when her album Renaissance earned best dance/electronic album. She beat the record set over 20 years ago by Hungarian-British conductor, George Solti. "I'm trying not to be too emotional" she said, accepting her prize, "I'm trying just to receive this night."

She thanked her family, especially her Uncle Johnny who made outfits for her in the early days of her career. His ties to the LGBTQ+ community and his death due to HIV inspired Renaissance's dance music.

Despite winning big, Beyoncé was overlooked for album of the year, which instead went to British artist Harry Styles. The former One Direction member earned the accolade for his third album, Harry's House. Styles downplayed the achievement saying "On nights like tonight, it's important for us to remember that there's no such thing as best in music."

Another momentous point was Sam Smith and Kim Petras' best duo/group performance. The two accepted the award for their single, Unholy, but Smith was silent as Petras gave her speech as the first transgender woman to win in the category. She thanked her mother for believing that she was a girl and for her love and support.

Other highlights included Lizzo winning record of the year and Bad Bunny's colourful performance. A surprise win came when singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt's sorrowful ballad Just Like That beat Beyoncé and Taylor Swift for song of the year.

The night ended with a celebratory performance honouring 50 years of hip-hop. Legends Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes and others gave a 12-minute showcase of the genre's essential songs.

It was a night of records, surprises and celebrations for the music industry.
