Queen's platinum jubilee - 16th February 2022

It's the platinum jubilee of Britain's longest reigning monarch. Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne upon her father's death, on 6th February 1952, at the young age of 25.

Now 95, the Queen marks her 70th year as the head of state. Customarily, the Queen would commemorate King George VI's death and her accession in quiet reflection at her East England Sandringham residence, the place of her father's passing.

However, breaking from this tradition, this year Queen Elizabeth II issued a statement expressing her desire that Prince Charles, who's next in line to the throne, and his wife Camilla be afforded the same support as she has throughout her reign, and that Camilla become Queen Consort at the appointed time.

The Queen has also announced plans for her platinum jubilee, which stand in stark contrast to her usual accession day traditions away from the public eye. A four day bank holiday in June has been declared alongside events mirroring her previous silver, golden and diamond jubilee celebrations.

Given the death of Prince Phillip in 2021, the platinum jubilee sees Her Majesty commemorating her 70th year of reign without her dear husband. Nevertheless, it's hoped that Covid restrictions will no longer be required and the public will be able to join in the celebrations for a much respected queen.
