Science gets its own best friend - 2nd October 2020 View All
This robotic dog, named Scar, is being trained by its owner, Mines Nancy, a leading French engineering school. It was purchased from the US robotics firm, Boston Dynamics.
Mines Nancy acquired Scar as part of their aim to lead technological innovation and work at the forefront of science.
By modifying Scar's features, its engineers have enabled it to navigate challenging surroundings and feed back its findings. Complete with 5 on board cameras, it can now survey its local environment, including undertaking measurements and recording its dimensions.
Scar's dog-shaped design offers advantages over humanoid robots. It provides greater mobility and functions better in rough terrain.
Developing applications for Scar, Mines Nancy is cooperating with various private and public institutions. The robot is expected to replace humans in challenging and complex environments.
Scar's first mission could come on a project for ANDRA, the French National Agency for the Management of Radioactive waste. Working at the head of large tunnel boring equipment, Scar will access areas humans aren't permitted to enter.
