Mammoth discovery of mammoths - 16th September 2020 View All
The skeletons of over 100 mammoths have been discovered close to Mexico City.
These ancient relatives of the elephant were spotted as a new airport was being constructed.
Experts believe that the area was an ancient lake bed and that the animals may have become stuck in the mud.
Archaeologists have also uncovered camels, horses, bison, birds, antelopes and fish. The animal remains are between 10,000 and 25,000 years old. The airport construction work is continuing under the supervision of 41 experts. Their task is to ensure the remains are preserved.
Archaeologists have already found evidence that early humans used mammoth bones to make tools. It is hoped that further research at the site will help reveal why these ancient mammals became extinct.
