Mammoth discovery of mammoths - 16th September 2020 View All
The skeletal remains of at least 100 mammoths have been unearthed at an airport construction site outside Mexico City.
Experts believe the area, once the site of a lake, attracted ancient animals, who then became trapped in the mud.
Also amongst the finds are the remains of camels, horses, bison, birds, antelopes and fish which date back over 10,000 years.
Construction at the new airport has resumed whilst 41 experts supervise the excavations to guarantee the preservation of the bones.
There is evidence to suggest that early humans developed tools from mammoth bones. Archaeologists are hopeful that continued study of the site may solve the puzzling mystery of why these massive mammals died out.
