Britain's new king - 10th May 2023 View All

Thousands of people celebrated the coronation of King Charles III. It's the first coronation in the UK since 1953. Many people slept outside in the rain to get the best view of the parade.

The coronation happened at Westminster Abbey and many world leaders and politicians attended. Charles III and Camilla travelled in a carriage in a military parade through the city.

People who camped in the cold were happy to see them.

Joann Howell: "Amazing."

Helen Calvert: "Absolutely incredible."

Joann Howell: "Loved every minute even though we're wet."

Helen Calvert: "Honour and a privilege to have been here."

Joann Howell: "And it was worth staying out all night in the freezing cold."

Shahenez Suleman: "Oh Gosh I'm speechless and amazed, I've got the the best seat as well, to take the best pictures. Just can't see, when you see, it's real, isn't it, seeing him, in the carriage."

Not everyone supports the king. Some people protested along the route at Trafalgar Square. They'd like to end the monarchy and for the United Kingdom to become a republic.

Kieran Smith: "I just think in the 21st century it's abhorrent that we've got a monarchy that's not democratically elected in. That we aren't part of a republic."

King Charles III and Queen Camilla returned from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace in the gold state coach. The coach was pulled by horses. They were followed by the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children. There were 4,000 members of the armed forces in the parade. Excitement filled the air.

As the king and queen appeared on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, supporters ran to the palace gates. They applauded them and watched the air show.
