Long live the king - 10th May 2023 View All

The streets of London were packed with people as Britain crowned its new king. The coronation of King Charles III is the first one in 70 years. Many people camped out overnight in the best spots to watch the royal procession.

On the day, world leaders and politicians filled Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony was to be held. Meanwhile, Charles III and Camilla travelled in a horse-drawn carriage through the city in a military parade.

People who'd waited overnight were excited to watch.

Joann Howell: "Amazing."

Helen Calvert: "Absolutely incredible."

Joann Howell: "Loved every minute even though we're wet."

Helen Calvert: "Honour and a privilege to have been here."

Joann Howell: "And it was worth staying out all night in the freezing cold."

Shahenez Suleman: "Oh Gosh I'm speechless and amazed, I've got the the best seat as well, to take the best pictures. Just can't see, when you see, it's real, isn't it, seeing him, in the carriage."

While many celebrated the new king, others protested.

Demonstrators at Trafalgar Square prefer a democratic republic to a monarchy, which they believe is outdated.

Kieran Smith: "I just think in the 21st century it's abhorrent that we've got a monarchy that's not democratically elected in. That we aren't part of a republic."

After the ceremony, King Charles III and Queen Camilla travelled back to Buckingham Palace in the gold state coach. The Prince and Princess of Wales followed with their children, surrounded by men and women of the armed forces. They were cheered on by well-wishers.

Once they had entered the palace, people ran to the gates to cheer the king and queen who came out on the balcony. The crowds enjoyed the flypast as well.

They braved the weather to be part of the historic day.
